Leaking shower repair in Revesby: upstairs shower leaking through the ceiling
An upstairs shower in a Revesby duplex was leaking through the ceiling of the room below. The owner had already tried to fix the floor themselves, but it was still leaking. We regrouted the floor with epoxy grout and resealed the edges in about 2 hours, without removing a single tile.

- Time on site: about 2 hours
- Back in use: after 24 hours of curing
- Tiles removed: none
- Completed: August 2026
The problem
Water from the upstairs shower was coming through the ceiling of the room underneath. The owner had tried to repair the shower floor, but the leak hadn't stopped.
What we found
The earlier DIY repair hadn't sealed the floor. New grout had been smeared across the faces of the tiles instead of packed into the joints, Many of the grout lines were cracked wide open and had been poorly filled, and the joints where the floor meets the walls and the hob were patchy, with gaps and old, failing silicone. Water could still get through the joints and under the tiles, which is how a shower ends up leaking into the room below.
The tiles themselves were sound and firmly fixed, so the floor didn't need to be ripped up.
What we did
- Raked out all the old and DIY grout from the floor joints.
- Cut out the old silicone along the edges and corners.
- Regrouted the floor with epoxy grout, which is waterproof and much harder-wearing than standard cement grout.
- Resiliconed the junctions between the floor, the walls and the hob.
- Sealed the floor and left it to cure.
The work took about 2 hours. The shower was ready to use after 24 hours of curing.
The result
No further leaks have been reported since the shower went back into use.
Is your shower leaking into the room below?
A stain or drip on the ceiling under a bathroom is one of the most common signs of a leaking shower. A DIY regrout often doesn't fix it, because the old grout has to come out completely and the edges have to be resealed as well. If the tiles are still sound, we can usually stop the leak without removing them. See our leaking shower repairs
